Radio Host Delilah Supports Together for Kids and Shriners Hospitals for Children®

Radio Host Delilah with a young girl

She’s healed the hearts of millions of Americans with her nightly radio song request and dedication program, but the most-listened-to woman on the radio, Delilah, has turned her attention to healing America’s kids. As a spokesperson for Together for Kids, a national alliance of children’s hospitals including Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the syndicated radio host will help raise money and awareness for this and other Together for Kids hospitals nationwide. A ceremony to launch the partnership was held today at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, one of three Together for Kids member hospitals serving the Tampa Bay area.

“As the mother of 11 children, I know that when your child is sick, nothing else matters,” said Delilah. “That’s why I am so passionate about the work being done by Together for Kids to connect its member hospitals with the funding they need to care for sick and injured children, regardless of their ability to pay. Every child deserves every chance to live a healthy life.” According to the American radio personality, author and songwriter, Together for Kids stood out from other children’s charities because one hundred percent of all funds raised directly support the health care needs of children served by its member hospitals.

Throughout the year, Delilah will take her audience of more than eight million listeners inside the walls of Together for Kids hospitals, including Shriners Hospitals for Children®, to hear from some courageous children facing some very serious health challenges. She’ll also introduce listeners to the people who work tirelessly to treat children affected by serious illness or injury.

“This partnership presents an opportunity to strengthen the work of Shriners Hospitals for Children® with the advanced technology, treatment, education and medical research we need to tackle today’s toughest pediatric issues,” said Marlena Lagina-Kleine, vice president of communications, development and public relations. “We are delighted to have Delilah join our alliance of children’s hospitals in creating a single voice advocating for children’s health.”

Founded in 2007, Together for Kids’ primary focus is on raising unrestricted funds for its member hospitals. The organization’s 43 member hospitals, including all Shriners Hospitals for Children, also benefit from being part of a collaborative network of peers sharing best practices to improve care for all of America’s sick and injured children.

My Lifesaving Friends

My name is Caitlin Bazinet. I am 20 years old and the Shriners Hospital in Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts saved my life. They are the reason I am here today and I can’t thank them all enough.

aitlin Bazinet

My 18th birthday was a life altering day. I was out partying with friends and decided after an embarrassing moment to go home. I was alone in my car driving  100 mph in a 25 mph zone. As I swerved to avoid another car, I lost control and  drove through a fence. I then hit a telephone pole and tree before flipping over and being trapped inside. My car caught fire and exploded – I was sure death was my fate.

It took 46 minutes for the firemen to free me. I was life-flighted to a hospital in Lewiston, Maine and then transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA. The doctors did everything they could to save my life. After undergoing 25 surgeries, I finally came out of a two month coma to learn that my feet and hands could not be saved.

I had to learn how to walk, talk, feed myself and so many other things that I thought would be impossible to achieve. At first it was the nurses at MGH that made it possible. Then I was transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston for further burn care.

I was scared to make the transition, but the Shriners Hospital staff made me feel safe – like I was truly home. They didn’t just care for my wounds, they cared about me. They wanted me to succeed when I felt I couldn’t. Because of the Shriners staff pushing me to achieve my goals I reached most of them before I was even discharged.

Talking, walking, eating, writing, typing you name it they had me doing it. They helped me with my school work so I could graduate with my class. Four days before my graduation I was sent home with a pair of legs so I could walk down the aisle with my classmates. Five of my Shrine friends attended my graduation and cheered me on.

Now I go to Shriners Hospital for Children – Springfield, MA for my prosthetic devices. There they have helped me with my “finishing touches.” They make sure I have the best prosthetics and the most comfortable fit so I can live a normal life…and today I can say I live a normal life thanks to them.

I am driving once again and using my experience to educate high school students about the dangers of driving under the influence. I hope my story will make teenagers and adults alike think before they drink and drive.

N.A.C.H.R.I. Photo Contest

Shriners Hospitals for Children®- Springfield has some exciting news to share. A photo submitted by hospital photographer Adrienne Lacey has been selected for inclusion to the NACHRI (National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions) 2011 Children’s Hospital Photo Exhibit.

The photo exhibit represents the endless ways children’s hospitals achieve their mission to care for all children. The exhibit displays children’s hospital’s highest quality photos that captivate viewers, bring them into the moment and exemplify superlative care.

Ten top winners along with 40 additional photos complete the 2011 exhibit.

The exhibit will launch at the 2011 NACHRI and N.A.C.H. Creating Connections Conference in Baltimore, March 13-16, 2011. NACHRI will later display the photos on Capitol Hill where the story in pictures will serve as a powerful reminder to Congress to consider how legislative decisions impact children’s hospitals and the children they serve.

In 2010, nine photos from various Shriners Hospitals for Children® were chosen for the exhibit, six of which were included in the top ten. To view last year’s pictures click here.
