Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Springfield, Massachusetts was established in 1925 to treat children with polio. Over the past 85 years, the hospital has expanded its services to meet the needs of children with various problems of the bones, muscles and joints. From treating the most routine to the most rarely seen orthopaedic conditions…our specially trained medical team strives to put the joys of childhood into the life of every child.
- The Shriners Hospitals for Children® are the philanthropy of the Shriners Fraternity, made up of 350,000 members.
- Children are eligible to receive care at Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Springfield if they are under the age of 18 and their orthopaedic needs can be met by the medical staff.
- Onsite services include inpatient and outpatient care, surgery, occupational and physical therapy, child life, nursing, orthotics and prosthetics, digital x-ray and ultrasound, motion/clinical outcomes assessment lab, family services and clinical nutrition, etc.
- 2,000 children are seen annually at outreach clinics in Maine, New York, US Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic and the country of Cyprus.
- The Springfield hospital family consists of 11,776 active patients, 230 employees, 170 volunteers and 23,863 Shriners representing 17 Shrine Centers in New England and New York.
- The hospital is governed by a regional Board of Governors made up of Shriners from New England and Upstate New York. The system has a national Joint Board which establishes the strategic plan and annual budget for all 22 hospitals.
