Run for Shriners
Gina Sanderson, grandmother of 2 year old Brady, a Springfield Shriners Hospital’s patient came up with a fun idea – to run in the Boston Marathon as a family. No one ever thought the idea would actually become a reality.
After each family member involved received the official acceptance from the Boston Athletic Association, they were ecstatic. What a great opportunity for all of them! After some discussion, they decided to raise money for an organization right in their backyard.
Shriners Hospital was the most obvious choice. Brady has been a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Mass since he was approximately one week old. He was sent there to correct a hip problem. He was immediately put into a traction device, which held his body in a certain position with his legs pulled forward. This brace, which he wore for 6 months, could not be removed. After those months, Brady was then fitted with another brace which he could wear on the outside of his clothing. As this brace could be taken off to dress him, he was finally able to experience the freedom to stretch his legs. He then began to crawl and have his first tubby! Over time, time wearing the brace was reduced and finally removed.
Things looked good; however, Shriners Hospital did not end their involvement with Brady. He continues to be seen; progress reviewed, and has his next appointment in one year. Brady is two years old and runs circles around all his family members!
In appreciation for the care and concern Brady received, and for all the work Shriners Hospital does every day – a donation of 1.00 per mile ($26.00), or an alternative flat rate donation can be made on behalf of Brady.
