			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Once again, Dunkin Donuts restaurants in the Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties of Massachusetts have chosen Shriners Hospitals for Children<sup><span style="font-size: xx-small;">®</span></sup> in Springfield to be the beneficiary of their upcoming Iced Coffee Day.   On Wednesday, May 22 all medium size ice coffees will sell for 99 cents with 50 cents being donated to the hospital! This event was tremendously successful last year bringing in $20,000 to the hospital.  Dunkin Donuts would like to double that total this year!</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;">Fire Safety Educators recently visited Shriners Hospitals for Children, in conjunction with the annual kick-off to its year-long burn awareness campaign. The group spent time educating patients about fire safety and what to do in the event of a house fire. Sparky the Fire Dog along with a few fire fighters also sang safety songs to patients and family members in the waiting room. The visit is a reminder for everyone to Be Burn Aware, the focus of the 2013 campaign, which concentrates on teaching children safety tips that will help keep them safe from burn injuries, especially at home.<br />

<p><span style="font-size: small;">The UMass ACHA Men’s Division II Hockey team is very committed to promoting the expert pediatric orthopedic care provided by Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Mass. The first ‘Shriners Night’ game matched the Minutemen against the UMaine Black Bears in 2010.  To commemorate the inaugural game, the UMass team created a custom UMass/UMaine jersey signed by both teams. At their match-up on Saturday, February 2, Shriners Hospital patient ambassador, Alex Ried accepted the jersey on behalf of the hospital. A monetary donation from the team was also presented by Caitlin Shore, great-granddaughter of Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Eddie Shore.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;">The Minutemen played a fabulous game and defeated the Black Bears, 6-0. The game was also played in honor of those serving in the military. Senior forward and team captain, #21 Mark Joyce, received the Top Gun award during this Annual Military Appreciation Night game. Joyce was the player who scored the most points and received the least amount of penalties prior to the game. On hand to present the Silver Plated 20mm shell trophy was Major Sean Halbrook from the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base. The award will be presented annually at military appreciation night.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The Minutemen added a custom patch to their home jerseys to show their relationship and dedication to the hospital. Kruger (1923-2007) served Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Mass continuously for fifty-five years, as a resident, staff member, assistant Chief of Staff and Emeritus Chief of Staff. Each year we honor Dr. Kruger by hosting a scientific program in his name.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Pediatric orthopedic surgeon John E. Herzenberg, MD, will be the distinguished lecturer at the 23rd Annual Leon M. Kruger, MD Guest Lectureship scheduled for May 31, 2013 at Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Springfield.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Dr. Herzenberg currently serves as the Director of Pediatric Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Director of the International Center for Limb Lengthening and Director of Limb Reconstruction Fellowship Program at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The lectures will take place in Shriners Hospital’s Ampitheatre from 8:00 a.m. &#8211; 12:30 p.m. <br />

<p><em>This program is being planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Baystate Health and Shriners Hospitals for Children-Springfield. <p><span style="font-size: small;"><strong>About Dr. John E. Herzenberg</strong>  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.springfieldshrinersblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/DrHerzenberg.jpg" rel="shadowbox[sbpost-3018];player=img;"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3019" title="" src="http://www.springfieldshrinersblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/DrHerzenberg-140x150.jpg" alt="" width="140" height="150" /></a>Dr. Herzenberg trained in limb lengthening directly with Professor Ilizarov in the USSR in 1989 and subsequently in Lecco, Italy, with Professor Maurizio Catagni. After completing medical school at Boston University, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University and subspecialty training in pediatric orthopedics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. After five years on the faculty of the University of Michigan, Dr. Herzenberg moved to Maryland and was professor of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Herzenberg co-founded the Maryland Center for Limb Lengthening &amp; Reconstruction at Kernan Hospital. He later co-founded the International Center for Limb Lengthening at Sinai Hospital in 2001. Dr. Herzenberg publishes his research frequently in a variety of orthopedic journals. He lectures throughout the world on topics related to limb lengthening and pediatric orthopedics. He is credited with re-introducing the Ponseti method of conservative clubfoot treatment. Dr. Herzenberg is married, has three children, and enjoys personal fitness training and Bible study. He travels with his family to developing countries such as Nicaragua, Colombia, and Ecuador on yearly Operation Rainbow missions to provide orthopedic care to disabled children.</span></p>
